PHILIP STANTON

Philip Stanton (b. 1962) is a North American artist and author, and he is also director of the design group Stanton Studio. Based in Barcelona (Spain), he creates visual projects in a variety of disciplines. As an illustrator, designer and painter, his work includes large urban projects, children’s books, set designs and advertising campaigns.

Education and formation
He was born in Columbus, Ohio (USA). At the age of four, he moved with his family to the east coast of Florida, near Cape Kennedy. In 1985, he obtained a Fine Arts Degree (BFA) from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. In the same year, he applied to the Master of Fine Arts Program (MFA) at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City. He was accepted, together with another sixteen students. In 1987, he graduated with honours from this prestigious program.

In 1988, having worked with Jean-Claude Suarès in New York as an art director and designer at Prentice Hall Press, a division of one of the leading North American publishing houses, Simon & Schuster, he moved to Barcelona, where he set up the design group Stanton Studio.

Barcelona
The city of Barcelona has been an important point of reference in Stanton’s work. The colours and energy of the Mediterranean, as well as his admiration for twentieth century masters Picasso and Matisse, are reflected in many of his projects.

Since 1988, he has participated in more than 40 individual and collective exhibitions, and he has collaborated with newspapers and magazines (his covers for the culture supplement of “La Vanguardia” have won awards from ADGFAD [the Spanish Association of Art Directors & Graphic Designers] and European Illustration/Illustration Now), as well as with a number of Spanish and international companies. His work has won many prizes, including several Laus awards, a Best Pack award, the Apel.les Mestres prize for children’s literature and the Junceda illustration prize.

Since 1995, he has taught illustration at the EINA Art & Design School in Barcelona, where he is head of the postgraduate creative illustration programme.

Notable works
He designed the spectacular installation around the Palau Robert (1997-98), the multimedia project for the Barcelona Aquarium (1998), the opening ceremony for the UEFA Champions League Final in Barcelona (1999), the design of the set for the "Serrat-Tarrés" concert tour of Joan Manuel Serrat (2000), the mural around the perimeter of the Agbar Tower designed by the architect Jean Nouvel (2001), the decoration of the Sagrada Familia underground railway station (2002), the façade of the PG45 building (2006) and the floats of the sponsors of the Cabalgata de Reyes (Three Kings Parade – 2007/8) for Barcelona City Council.

Author and illustrator
As an illustrator of books for children and adults, he has published more than 20 titles, including collaborations with writers such as Emili Teixidor, Jordi Sierra i Fabra, Ray Bradbury, Naguib Mahfouz, Lee Bennett Hopkins, J. Patrick Lewis, Juan Carlos Martín Ramos, Tomàs Garcés and Jorge Zentner. He is also the author and illustrator of "La Gata Misha", a series of children’s books published in Spain by Grupo SM.
His work has been published and/or translated into English, Spanish, French, Dutch, Catalan, German and Italian.
