The Intervida Foundation became the largest NGO in Spain, but it all collapsed when the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in Barcelona accused the administrators of the foundation of embezzlement of 200 million euros, among other alleged offences. According to these accusations, all that the NGO represented was an enormous lie. This book reveals the conclusions of an investigation that makes no concessions, shunning easy demagoguery and cheap sentimentality; an investigation without a priori assumptions, in which everything that is said is proved. This is the story of a conspiracy: economic interests, pressure groups, fraudsters, politicians, public prosecutors, stockbrokers… There are many players, but just one objective: to destroy Intervida.
Was the only purpose of the organisation to collect funds and misappropriate these? Have the administrators of Intervida been robbing the patrons over the course of fifteen years? If Interpol investigated the NGO on the ground and concluded that everything was in order, what happened in the Prosecutor’s Office in Barcelona ? Is a former employee of Intervida who was convicted for defrauding the NGO the cornerstone of the investigation? What is the relationship between Intervida – an apolitical, non-denominational and independent organisation – with the principal players in the co-operation sector in Spain? And, above all, who stands to gain from the collapse of the NGO? Independently of what took place in the courts, two investigations that pursued separate paths coincide on one point. Or rather, on two: Intervida and Intermón. This is how detective and journalist discover what is hidden behind the official story.
